Media

Definition: A medium is a medium used by an individual or group to communicate to another individual or other group, other than face to face (more or less far), the expression of their thought, whatever the form and the purpose of this expression. As a means of transporting or transmitting information, a medium always makes it possible to link people together. The five major media today are: the press, television, radio, posters and the Internet.

In the broad sense, sociologists distinguish 3 types of media:

  • stand-alone media (without connection to a network),
  • the broadcast medium (reaches a large audience, such as television),
  • the communication medium (two-way communication, such as the telephone).
